N(orwood) "Ding" Darling, 1876-1962, was best known as a political
cartooninst, winning two Pulitzer Prizes while at the Des Moines IA
Register. His cartoons were also syndicated in the NY Herald Tribune.
His more lasting claim to fame is as a wildlife conservationist. Though
he was a Republcan, President Roosevelt appointed him to a Wildlife
Restoration Committee. He was the designer of the first Duck Hunting
stamp, and a wildlife preserve on Sanibel Island in Florida is named for
him.
