In addition to being a phenomenally accomplished artist with wide national recognition, Adolphe APPIAN (French, 1819-1898) was an astute businessman. Not only did he manage to have a successful career while living far away from Paris, the only true art center in France in the 19th century, he did so while breaking ground as an artist. Known for quiet and attractive landscapes, Appian appealed to the full spectrum of collectors. Monarchs and the elite bought his work, while bourgeois of simple means collected his etchings. For those who couldn’t afford oil paintings, but wanted painterly works, Appian drew amazing charcoal compositions. He is today remembered for being a multifaceted artist whose landscapes remain attractive to the modern eye.
