Artist: Masao Maeda 前田政雄 (1904-1974)
Title: Mt. Moiwa in the Rain (Ame no Moiwa-yama 雨の藻岩山) Date: 1932
Series: Eight Views of Sapporo (Sapporo hakkei札幌八景)
A stream meanders through the foreground, a cluster of low rooftops glimpsed beyond its far bank. Mount Moiwa is located about 5 km southwest of the center of Sapporo, Hokkaido. Today, the area surrounding this mountain is a sprawling citiscape, and a cable car offers quick access to the peak. Thus this depiction serves as a visual record of a much more bucolic locale that is now developed almost beyond recognition. At the top margin right is a seal that reads “hozon” 保存, “preservation”, or “to keep”. This might indicate that this is a special example of this design, and it was probably denoted thus by the artist himself.
