JOHN MARIN (1872 – 1953)
MOVEMENT DOWNTOWN 1914, (Not in Zigrosser)
Etching, signed and titled in pencil. Signed & dated in the plate lower left. 8 3/8 x 6 5/8”, sheet 11 ¼” x 9 3/8”
UNKNOWN PROBABLY UNIQUE IMPRESSION FROM 1914. NOT IN ZIGROSSER OR THE PHLADELPHIA MUSEUM MASTER SET.
In 1914, the year following his monumental Woolworth Building etchings, Marin created only a handful of prints in editions of only a couple impressions. There are only 4 other known prints done in 1914, 3 are titled St Pauls at Broadway. 2 of those in only one known proof and 1 has 3 known proofs. Another image Broad St, sold at Swanns twice but is not in Zigrosser.
Movement Downtown, a Cubist/Modernist New York composition was arguably Marin’s most abstract composition in 1914 in content and title, and apparently never before located or catalogued.
