LEONARD EDMONDSON (1916 – 2002)
THE MOST FORMAL GARDEN, c. 1965
Color intaglio signed titled and annotated “Artist’s Proof" Irregular platemark 10 ¼ x14 ¾”, Sheet 16 ½ x 22 3/8”. Very good condition the slightest pale mat line and a few remnants of small tape bits at the sheet edge recto. In some of his later work as here, Edmondson experimented with irregular cut etching plates. This with the deep embossing of the image gives a feeling of dimension to the print.Edmondson was an important mid-century Abstract Expressionist who worked in Los Angeles. He produced a large body of work beginning in the late 40’s with small lyrical abstract etchings that he said were influenced by Paul Klee. In the early 50’s he began making prints that were some of the most advanced abstract color prints in the country.
