Solman, Joseph (Amercan, 1909-2008). UNTITLED (SUBWAY STUDY) AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN IN AN OVERCOAT. Pencil on a velum-like paper, not dated. There is also a partly sketched man's head in the image above the subject. Initialed in pencil, lower left, consistent with Solman's practice with the subway sketches. 9 1/4 x 5 1/2 (sheet), Framed to 16 x 12 inches. In excellent condition.
Although Solman studied at the Art
Student's League he claimed he learned more by sketching fellow
passengers on buses and subways. He worked for the WPA, and was
exhibited and respected throughout his long career. With the return of
interest in figurative art and art with social content, Solman's work
garners increasing attention now.
