Arthur Briscoe was a painter in oil and watercolor and etcher of marine subjects. Educated at Shrewsbury School, Briscoe subsequently studied art at the Slade under Fred Brown and at the Académie Julian in Paris. Subsequently, he devoted his time sailing. Arthur Briscoe painted and wrote on yachting subjects including Handbook on Sailing under the nom de plume of Clove Hitch.
